FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Alexander Technique?

Alexander Technique is a powerful method loved by musicians, dancers, actors and laypeople alike. It is offered as part of the curriculum in the majority of performing arts schools across the globe.

The Technique is invaluable for anyone using their mind and body at a high level. It helps us let go of habits that may stand in the way of our full potential, such as excess tension, incorrect posture and movement patterns and on a mental side, performance anxiety.

How is this course different?

Even though Alexander Technique in itself is a fantastic tool for reducing tension and finding ease and flow in movement, it is often not enough to change deep-seated, ingrained playing habits.

Apart from the essential whole body retraining that Alexander Technique offers, pianists also need to undo technical habits that are piano-specific. They need to be observed by an expert who is trained to see both the bigger picture and the smaller details of pianism. For this reason, Helen has created a highly efficient method that brings results fast. This unique approach combines the key elements of Alexander Technique with piano playing and mindset work unlike anything else out there.

Will I become a certified Alexander Technique teacher?

The training will give you a deep understanding of how to use Alexander principles in your work as a pianist and a teacher. You will receive a certificate of completion after each level that will demonstrate your competence in this field. However, The Institute will not certify you to become an Alexander Technique teacher, which requires graduating from a three-year full-time training course.

Who is this training for?

This program is for anyone passionate about piano playing and teaching. Our courses are equally loved by serious amateurs and high-level professionals. If you’re looking to recover from injuries, reduce tension, overcome performance anxiety or simply learn about these powerful tools to use in your work, these courses are created for you!

Can I join if I’m not a professional pianist?

Absolutely, we have many amateur level pianists who learn with us to improve their playing and performing!

What is Emotional Freedom Techniques?

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT or Tapping) is an efficient stress-relief technique. It is a self help tool that should be in every musician’s toolbox, because it is highly effective for anxiety, low confidence, stage fright, stress and physical pain.

In the case of deep rooted trauma or issues that are difficult to resolve on one’s own, having EFT sessions with a qualified practitioner is extremely helpful and will often shift the problem fairly quickly.

How long is the training?

The program consists of three levels, each 8 weeks in duration. The levels build on each other progressively and most students choose to go through the whole program to get the full benefits.

How long does it take for me to feel reduction in tension, pain or performance anxiety?

Most people start to feel improvement after the first weeks of training. However, the time it takes to see reduction in pain, tension or anxiety levels depends on your personal situation and history.

In the Institute we work with you closely to help you achieve the maximum results in the shortest amount of time possible. However, please note that our courses are educational in nature and we cannot diagnose or treat medical issues. If you have health concerns, please consult your doctor.

Is this similar to Taubman Method?

There are many similarities between what you learn in the Institute and Taubman method.

Both are advocating injury-free, efficient piano playing and are helping pianists recover from tension and pain.

The main difference is that the Alexander Technique element brings a very unique angle of whole body focus. Our whole body has to be free and well-coordinated in order for our hands and arms to function well. There are also differences in approach when it comes to sound production and piano technique.

When do the courses start?

We have set start dates each month. To find out the exact dates contact the Institute directly.
